What is Lip Augmentation?

Lip augmentation is a type of cosmetic procedure that creates fuller, plumper, and more youthful-looking lips. There are different types of lip augmentation, including nonsurgical options. On the surgical side, Dr. Hassanzadeh offers fat grafting or an implant of your own body’s dermis or fascia to increase the fullness and volume of the lips.

Lip augmentation pairs extremely well with an upper lip lift to maximize your red lip volume and show.

I will forever be grateful to her and her staff. I can’t recommend her enough. She personally followed up with me to see how I was feeling and to make sure I was ok. The Lip Augmentation Procedure

At our office, Dr. Hassanzadeh offers a few different lip augmentation options, including fat transfer and lip implants.

Fat Transfer

With fat grafting and transfer, we’ll first administer local or general anesthesia. From there, Dr. Hassanzadeh will perform liposuction to loosen and suction out fat from a donor site, such as from the lower belly. The fat will then be purified. She will then inject the fat into your lips through two pokes in the left and right corners of the mouth. The procedure takes about an hour.

Lip Implants

The lip implant procedure begins with administering local or general anesthesia. Dr. Hassanzadeh will start by obtaining a graft of your natural donor tissue to create an implant. This can be from the dermis of the skin removed in an upper lip lift, or fascia from around the face or scalp. She will then make a small poke in each corner of the mouth and create a tunnel in the lips. The implant is placed in this tunnel. Once the implant is in the right place, she may place a dissolvable suture in the access sites, and you can start your healing process. This is also about an hour long.

Lip Augmentation Recovery

What to expect during your recovery will depend on the type of lip augmentation you have done. You will likely have some bruising and swelling in the treatment area, but those side effects will dissipate as you heal.

You should elevate your head while you’re sleeping, avoid putting pressure on your lips, and avoid moving your lips excessively. You can use cold compresses on your lips to help ease the swelling.

On average, it can take a few weeks before you’re fully recovered.

Am I a Candidate?

During your consultation with Dr. Hassanzadeh, she will help you determine if lip augmentation is right for you and, if so, which type. Ideal candidates are those who are in generally good health, nonsmokers, and those with realistic expectations. We also recommend you don’t have an active infection like a cold sore.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lip Augmentation

Is lip augmentation permanent?

It depends on the type of lip augmentation! The most common lip augmentation is with filler, in which case it is not permanent. However, augmentation with fat grafting IS permanent. In your custom consultation, Dr. Hassanzadeh can help you choose the optimal treatment for your needs and desires.

When can I eat after lip augmentation?

While there are no definitive restrictions on your diet, you will feel more comfortable avoiding significant stretching of your lips (i.e. biting into a cheeseburger!) in the first few days after augmentation.

Can I still look natural after lip augmentation?

The goal of a well-executed lip augmentation is to look natural! Duck lips are NOT an aesthetic goal at Dr. Hassanzadehs practice.

Is there downtime after lip augmentation?

Swelling and minor bruising are common after lip augmentation. With filler injection, these resolve within several days, while with fat transfer the healing process lasts about 1 week.

How do I prepare for lip augmentation?

As with any procedure, avoid substances that can worsen bleeding and bruising such as aspirin, Advil or Motrin, and alcohol for 2-3 days leading up to your procedure. You may also consider oral Arnica to minimize swelling, which can be started 1-2 weeks before your procedure.

Can lip augmentation be combined with an upper lip lift for a more youthful result?

Absolutely. Pairing lip augmentation with an upper lip lift can enhance vermilion display (the visible red part of the lip) and improve balance between lip fullness and philtrum length, yielding a rejuvenated yet natural look.

Does lip augmentation address age-related thinning of the lips?

Yes. Surgical techniques not only restore fullness but can also correct volume loss due to aging, restoring a more youthful contour and reducing fine smoker’s lines around the mouth.

Will lip augmentation affect how my lips feel or move?

When performed by an expert, surgical augmentation should preserve full mobility and sensation. Because Dr. Hassanzadeh uses your own tissue and works within the natural structures of the lip, movement and expression remain natural.

Can I have lip augmentation if I’ve previously had fillers that I’m unhappy with?

Many patients transition from temporary fillers to surgical options for a more permanent solution. A consultation with Dr. Hassanzadeh helps determine what can be done safely and effectively to reach your goals.

Can surgical lip augmentation be customized to my lip shape and facial proportions?

Yes. Surgical options like fat grafting or natural tissue implants allow Dr. Hassanzadeh to sculpt volume in a way that harmonizes with your unique lip anatomy and overall face, rather than simply increasing size. Customization ensures balanced, natural outcomes tailored to your features.
