If spider veins, cherry angiomas, broken capillaries, or vascular redness have been on your list of concerns, VascuPen offers a fast, comfortable, and highly effective solution. Under Dr. Hassanzadeh’s expert care, treatments are tailored to your specific skin and concerns so you can achieve clear, even-toned skin with confidence.
What is VascuPen?
VascuPen is a precision diode laser handpiece available on the Alma Harmony platform, one of the most advanced multi-modality aesthetic laser systems in the world. It operates at a 530nm green wavelength, which is specifically and selectively absorbed by oxyhemoglobin, the pigment found in red blood cells within blood vessels.
When the VascuPen’s laser energy is absorbed by hemoglobin within a vessel, it generates targeted heat that causes the vessel walls to collapse. The body then naturally reabsorbs the treated vessel over the following days and weeks, gradually clearing the lesion from view. Because the energy is selectively absorbed by hemoglobin and not the surrounding tissue, the skin around each treated vessel remains unaffected.
What truly sets VascuPen apart is its pen-like design, which allows for millimeter-level precision. Unlike broader light-based devices, VascuPen enables Dr. Hassanzadeh to treat even the smallest, most delicate vascular structures with focused, pinpoint accuracy, making it ideal for facial concerns where precision is paramount.

I received Botox with Dr. H two weeks ago and absolutely LOVE how my results are settling in! She really listened to me and my concerns and gave me the best treatment plan for what I wanted! I couldn’t be happier and so excited to come back soon for more treatments!!!
What Can VascuPen Treat?
VascuPen’s selective targeting of hemoglobin makes it highly effective for a range of vascular and pigmented concerns on the face and body. At Dr. H Faces, VascuPen is commonly used to treat:
- Spider veins (telangiectasias): Small, thread-like veins visible near the skin’s surface on the face, nose, and cheeks.
- Broken capillaries: Tiny ruptured blood vessels that appear as fine red lines, often around the nose and across the cheeks.
- Cherry angiomas: Benign, bright-red vascular growths that commonly develop on the face and body with age.
- Facial redness & diffuse rosacea: Persistent background redness and flushing caused by dilated superficial blood vessels.
- Port wine stains & vascular birthmarks: Larger vascular birthmarks that can be progressively lightened over a series of treatments.
- Hemangiomas: Benign vascular lesions composed of an abnormal buildup of blood vessels near the skin’s surface.
- Superficial pigmented lesions: Certain flat, superficial brown spots that respond to the 530nm wavelength’s melanin-targeting capability.
VascuPen can be used on the face, neck, décolletage, and body. During your consultation, Dr. Hassanzadeh will evaluate your lesions and confirm which concerns are best suited to VascuPen treatment.
What are the Benefits?
VascuPen combines clinical precision with patient-friendly convenience, making it one of the most compelling options for vascular lesion treatment available today:
- Pinpoint precision. The pen-like handpiece allows Dr. Hassanzadeh to target individual vessels with millimeter-level accuracy, minimizing impact on surrounding skin.
- Selective targeting. The 530nm wavelength is preferentially absorbed by hemoglobin, meaning energy is delivered specifically to the treatment target — not the surrounding tissue.
- Little to no downtime. Most patients experience only mild, temporary redness after treatment and can return to their normal routines the same day.
- Fast treatment sessions. Depending on the number and size of lesions, most VascuPen sessions can be completed in as little as 15 to 30 minutes.
- Safe for the face. VascuPen’s controlled, pen-like delivery makes it well-suited for delicate facial areas where precision is essential.
VascuPen Procedure & Recovery
Before Your Treatment
Your journey begins with a consultation with Dr. Hassanzadeh, during which she will assess your vascular concerns, review your skin and medical history, and confirm that VascuPen is the right approach for your needs. In the days leading up to your appointment, you will be advised to avoid sun exposure and self-tanning products, as a tan can interfere with the laser’s selective targeting. You should also arrive at your appointment with clean, product-free skin. Dr. Hassanzadeh’s concierge team will walk you through any additional pre-treatment guidelines specific to your skin.
During Your Treatment
VascuPen sessions are typically brief, lasting anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the area and number of lesions being treated. Dr. Hassanzadeh will use the VascuPen handpiece to trace each vessel or lesion with focused pulses of laser energy. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild, quick snap or brief flash of heat; very well-tolerated without the need for topical anesthesia in most cases. Protective eyewear will be worn throughout the procedure.
Immediately following treatment, treated vessels may appear slightly darker or more pronounced; this is a normal response indicating that the laser has successfully targeted the vessel. This temporary darkening resolves as the body begins reabsorbing the treated structures.
After Your Treatment & Recovery
Recovery after VascuPen is minimal for most patients. You may experience mild redness, slight swelling, or a sensation similar to a mild sunburn in the treated area for a few hours following your session. Most patients are comfortable returning to work and their normal routine the same day.
Over the one to two weeks following treatment, treated vessels will gradually fade as the body reabsorbs them. Dr. Hassanzadeh will advise you to avoid direct sun exposure during the healing period and to apply broad-spectrum SPF daily. Depending on the type and number of lesions being treated, some patients achieve their desired results in one to two sessions, while others with more extensive concerns may benefit from a series of three to four treatments.
Who is a Good Candidate?
VascuPen is an excellent option for a wide range of patients. You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have visible spider veins, broken capillaries, or telangiectasias on the face or body
- Are bothered by cherry angiomas, hemangiomas, or other benign vascular lesions
- Experience persistent facial redness or rosacea driven by dilated surface vessels
- Are looking for a precise, low-downtime treatment that fits into a busy lifestyle
- Have lighter to medium skin tones (ideal for VascuPen’s 530nm wavelength)
- Want to complement other skin rejuvenation treatments with targeted vascular clearance
VascuPen may not be appropriate for patients who are pregnant, have recently tanned or have a deep tan, or have certain active skin conditions in the treatment area. Patients with very dark skin tones may be better served by alternative modalities. A consultation with Dr. Hassanzadeh is the best way to determine whether VascuPen is right for you and which treatment plan will deliver the clearest, most lasting results.
Pairs Well With These Treatments
VascuPen works beautifully as a standalone treatment and as part of a broader skin rejuvenation plan. At Dr. Hassanzadeh’s practice, it is frequently combined with:
- Iris Dye-VL (IPL): Pair VascuPen’s pinpoint vascular precision with the Dye-VL’s broader treatment of diffuse redness, sun damage, and pigmentation for comprehensive complexion correction.
- ClearLift Pro Q-Switched: Address deeper pigmentation and skin laxity alongside VascuPen’s targeted vascular clearance for a fully rejuvenated complexion.
- Botox & Neuromodulators: Smooth dynamic expression lines while VascuPen clears vascular and pigment concerns for an overall refreshed, even appearance.
- HA or Biostimulating Fillers: Restore volume and facial structure in the same treatment visit for a comprehensive aesthetic enhancement.
- Morpheus8: Address skin laxity and deep tissue remodeling alongside VascuPen’s targeted surface-level vascular treatments for multi-dimensional rejuvenation.
Dr. Hassanzadeh will work with you to build a personalized treatment protocol that addresses your concerns.
