What is Hair Grafting?

Hair grafting is a type of hair transplant surgery involving taking skin and hair follicles from one area of the scalp (usually from the back of the head) and grafting these pieces onto the area of balding or thinning hair. Once the grafts are placed, they will continue to grow hair, leaving you with a fuller head of hair.

While older techniques favored surgically rotating large areas of the scalp or transferring a strip of scalp (FUT) that often looked unnatural or unsightly, the latest advances in follicular unit extraction (FUE) have mitigated these problems. FUE ensures the most natural results with minimal downtime by transferring individual hair follicles from the donor site to the recipient site. The donor site is typically hidden in the back of the scalp, while the recipient site may be the front of the hairline or crown of the head.

The Hair Grafting Procedure

To start your hair grafting procedure, we’ll start by administering an anesthetic to the treatment area. Dr. Hassanzadeh will then make extremely small incisions to remove individual hair follicles/units. The hair follicles will then be moved and grafted to the area of balding or thinning hair. How long treatment takes will depend on the number of hairs being moved and grafted and the results you’re looking for. Treatment can take anywhere from 2-8 hours, and several sessions may be needed.

Hair Grafting Recovery

After your hair grafting procedure, you may have redness, swelling, and minimal discomfort, but these side effects will dissipate as your scalp heals. During the recovery process, you will want to rest as much as possible and avoid strenuous activities. Dr. Hassanzadeh will also give you detailed instructions on how best to take care of the treatment area and when you can return to your normal level of activity.

Who is a Candidate?

Ideal candidates for hair grafting are generally healthy adults with realistic expectations, nonsmokers, and those struggling with thinning or balding hair. Patients must also still have areas of thick hair growth somewhere on their scalp that can be transferred and grafted during the procedure.
