What is Fat Grafting & Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer or fat grafting is a cosmetic procedure that takes your own fat from one area of the body and injects it into another area of the body. Most often, fat is taken from the abdomen, hips, and thighs and can be moved to the face, lips, and cheeks.

Patient Testimonial

Incisionless Otoplasty, Xeomin

Dr. H is an exceptional physician! I visited her for Xeomin injections and a consultation for Otoplasty (ear pinning surgery). She was professional, warm, and attentive, answering all my questions and ensuring I felt at ease. I wanted a “frozen but natural” look, and she guided me through my concerns without any pressure. The injections were quick and painless, and the results were exactly what I hoped for. As for the Otoplasty, I had avoided it my entire life (I’m 39) because surgery felt too invasive. Dr. H introduced me to an incision-less option, and I immediately signed up. The procedure was done in the clinic with only a numbing injection—I felt nothing! I couldn’t be happier with the results and am so grateful to have found such a skilled and compassionate surgeon.

What are the Benefits of Fat Grafting & Fat Transfer?

Some of the benefits you can expect with fat grafting and fat transfer include the following:

  • Natural-looking results: Because we use your own fat, you can expect much more natural-looking and subtle results when compared to fillers and other procedures.
  • Long-lasting results: Compared to fillers, fat transfer comes with extremely long-lasting results. The results can last for many years.
  • Boost in confidence: Many patients notice a boost in confidence after their fat transfer procedure.
  • Decreased chance of migration or reaction: Because we are transferring your own fat from one area to another, there is a decreased risk of migration to undesired areas, as with fillers. Similarly, there is a much lower risk of rejection or reaction compared to filler.

The Fat Grafting & Fat Transfer Procedure

Fat transfer surgery can take one to two hours, depending on where the fat is being taken from and the area(s) it’s being transferred to, and the volume of fat required.

The procedure will begin with the administration of local or general anesthesia. From there, Dr. Hassanzadeh will make a needle poke in the donor area. She will then use gentle liposuction to loosen and suction out excess fat. The fat will then be purified and injected into the treatment area.

Fat Grafting & Fat Transfer Recovery

After fat transfer surgery, it’s common to experience mild side effects in both the donor and treated areas, including minimal bruising, swelling, and tenderness. These side effects will subside in the days and week following the procedure. You may need to wear a compression garment in one or both areas to help ease swelling and aid in the healing process.

Most patients can return to work and light activities after about a week, but it will depend on how labor-intensive your job is.

As for results, it can take up to 3 months before you’re fully healed and for you to see the complete results.

Am I a Candidate?

Ideal candidates for fat grafting and fat transfer include patients who are in generally good health, at or near their ideal weight, nonsmokers, those with realistic expectations, and those looking for natural, subtle results. Candidates should also have enough fat in one or more areas of their body to transfer to another part of the body.
