What is an Upper Lip Lift?

An upper lip lift is a surgical procedure designed to lessen the area between the bottom of the nose and the top of the upper lip. By reducing this area, we give the appearance that the upper lip is fuller and more lifted.

An upper lip lift can also improve dental show, add volume, reverse a down-turned lip corner, and eliminate lines caused by aging.

There are many different types of lip lift procedures, including:

  • Bullhorn lip lift (subnasal lip lift): This is the most common lip lift surgery and involves a single incision in the area below your nose.
  • Central lip lift: Your surgeon makes one incision at the base of your nose to lift the center of your upper lip.
  • Corner lip lift: This type elevates the corners of your mouth into a slight smile. This is ideal for people with downturned or drooping lips.
  • Gullwing lip lift: Dr. Hassanzadeh will make an incision along the border of the upper lip to create a more defined upper lip.
  • V to Y lip lift: Your surgeon will make an incision in the shape of a V and close the incision in the shape of the letter Y.

What are the Benefits of an Upper Lip Lift?

The benefits of a lip lift include the following:

  • Permanent results: The results of a lip lift are permanent, meaning you don’t have to worry about repeated treatments.
  • More voluminous upper lift: You can expect to have a fuller, more voluminous upper lip after this simple procedure.
  • Give you a youthful appearance: An upper lift cannot only give you a plumper upper lip but can also address lines along your upper lip, giving you a more youthful look.
  • Improve your smile: Because an upper lip lift can address and cover overly exposed teeth, it can improve your smile as well.
  • Boost your self-confidence: Many patients who have an upper lip lift often notice a boost of confidence and self-esteem.

The Upper Lip Lift Procedure

The upper lip lift procedure is a relatively straightforward procedure. Dr. Hassanzadeh will start by marking structural landmarks, the anticipated incision, and measuring the desired amount of skin removal. From there, she’ll administer local anesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable, or the procedure may be combined with additional rejuvenation surgery under general anesthesia. From there, Dr. Hassanzadeh will make the appropriate incisions to remove excess skin from the area between the bottom of your nose and your upper lip. She will then lift the upper lip into position and close the incisions with low-profile sutures. In total, the lip lift typically takes less than an hour.

Upper Lip Lift Recovery

After upper lip lift surgery, you will likely have some redness, mild sensitivity, and swelling, but that will dissipate within a few days. Dr. Hassanzadeh will give you detailed instructions on how best to take care of the treatment area. You’ll want to keep your head elevated, avoid moving your lips a lot, take medications as instructed, and avoid drinking alcohol. Soft foods are encouraged.

As for results, you can expect an immediate improvement, and final healing within 3-6 months.

Am I a Candidate?

Ideal candidates for an upper lip lift are generally healthy individuals with realistic expectations who are nonsmokers.

Pairs Well With…

An upper lip lift is ideally combined with lip augmentation. Additional facial rejuvenation procedures that enhance the results of an upper lip lift include facelift or deep-plane facelift, rhinoplasty, and fat transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Upper Lip Lifts

What is an upper lip lift, and how is it different from lip fillers?

An upper lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the space between the nose and upper lip (the philtrum), creating a more youthful, balanced, and defined lip shape. Unlike fillers, which add temporary volume, a lip lift permanently enhances the visible portion of the pink lip without increasing fullness artificially.

What are the different types of lip lifts?

The most common technique is the subnasal “bullhorn” lip lift, where a small incision is hidden beneath the base of the nose. Dr. Hassanzadeh has mastered the deep-plane lip lifting technique, which is a new approach that enhances the longevity of your results. Other variations include the corner lip lift and Italian lip lift, depending on your anatomy and goals. Dr. Hassanzadeh will recommend the best approach for natural-looking results.

Will I have visible scars after a lip lift?

The scar is discreetly hidden at the base of the nose and becomes barely noticeable as it heals. Scar care instructions and follow-up treatments (like laser or microneedling) can further minimize visibility.

How long do the results of a lip lift last?

Results are considered permanent, though natural aging will continue. Patients can expect to enjoy a refreshed, lifted look for many years without the need for repeat procedures.

Can a lip lift be combined with other procedures?

Yes! Many patients combine their lip lift with a facelift, neck lift, or blepharoplasty for a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. It also pairs beautifully with fat transfer or fillers in the lower lip for balance.

Can an upper lip lift be performed if I previously had lip fillers or other injectable treatments?

Yes. Prior lip fillers or injectables generally do not prevent you from having an upper lip lift. However, it may be necessary to dissolve your lip filler first, depending on the volume. During your consultation, Dr. Hassanzadeh will evaluate your lips and discuss the best approach to achieve a natural, balanced result.

Does an upper lip lift change my smile?

An upper lip lift can subtly enhance your smile by shortening the distance between your upper lip and nose, allowing more of your teeth to show when you smile. The procedure is designed to maintain a natural expression, so your smile should look refreshed and youthful, not “overdone” or unnatural.

How long is recovery after an upper lip lift?

Recovery is typically quick. Most patients experience mild swelling and bruising for about 1–2 weeks. Stitches are usually removed or dissolve within a week, and most people feel comfortable returning to work and social activities within 7–10 days. Full results become more apparent as swelling subsides over several weeks.

Can an upper lip lift improve aging lips?

Absolutely. As we age, the upper lip can elongate and lose volume, making the face appear less youthful. An upper lip lift restores balance by shortening the distance between the nose and lip, enhancing lip projection, and creating a more vibrant, youthful appearance. It’s often combined with other rejuvenation treatments for optimal results.

How is the amount of skin removed determined?

Dr. Hassanzadeh customizes the procedure to each patient’s unique anatomy and aesthetic goals. During your consultation, she carefully measures the distance between your nose and upper lip, evaluates your smile and lip shape, and plans the precise amount of skin removal to achieve a natural, harmonious result.

What is the best age for a lip lift?

There is no single “best” age for a lip lift; instead, it depends on anatomy, skin quality, and goals, but many patients seek the procedure in their late 20s through their 60s, when lip lengthening or thinning becomes noticeable.

Will I still be able to use lip fillers after a lip lift?

Yes, patients can often use small, strategic amounts of filler after healing to fine-tune volume and shape, while the lift provides the overall structural improvement in lip position.

When will I see my final results?

Lip position looks noticeably different right away, but swelling can take a couple weeks to settle; the most refined results are usually visible after a few months once tissues fully soften.

What type of anesthesia is used for an upper lip lift?

An upper lip lift is most often done under local anesthesia, sometimes with light oral or IV sedation, so the area is completely numbed while the patient remains awake and comfortable. General anesthesia is usually reserved for cases where the lip lift is combined with other procedures, such as a facelift, or when there is a specific medical or patient comfort reason to do the surgery with the patient fully asleep.

Does an upper lip lift affect the ability to animate my face (e.g., smiling, pouting, or extreme expression)?

No, a properly executed upper lip lift should not negatively affect the animation of your face. In fact, for many patients, it can make their smile appear more relaxed, youthful, and vibrant.

Will I see the scar?

No, the incision is rarely able to be seen once healed. The placement is strategically concealed inside a natural crease at the junction of your lip and nose and is hidden by the shadows cast by your nose. Initially, after surgery, the area can be mildly pink, but this is easily concealed by light makeup until the incision has fully healed.
