What is Hairline Advancement?

Hairline advancement, also known as forehead reduction surgery, is designed to reduce the size of the forehead and lower the hairline. This procedure also helps shape the hairline, rounding out sharp areas of recession in the temples, if needed. For those with a receding hairline or a larger forehead, this can help patients boost their confidence and feel more comfortable with what they see in the mirror.

The Hairline Advancement Procedure

To start your hairline advancement, we’ll administer general anesthesia to ensure your comfort. From there, an incision is placed right behind your natural hairline and extends into the scalp. Dr. Hassanzadeh will then pull and lower the hairline about 2-3 centimeters (about an inch). She can also round out any sharp areas along the hairline to give a softer, more feminine appearance.

Once all the necessary changes are made, excess skin will be removed. Dr. Hassanzadeh will close the incisions using sutures and small clips, and you’ll be able to start the recovery process.

Hairline Advancement Recovery

After your hairline advancement procedure, you will need to wear a compression dressing for several days. You will likely have swelling and bruising, and numbness of the scalp is common, but those side effects will dissipate after a few weeks. You’ll want to keep your head elevated to reduce swelling and aid in the healing process. You’ll also be prescribed pain medication to ensure you’re comfortable throughout your recovery.

After a week, you’ll come into the office to have your staples removed. You will start to notice results after about a month, but final results typically take a year to fully appear.

Who is a Candidate?

Men and women who are struggling with the size of their forehead and/or their hairline are typically good candidates for hairline advancement. We also recommend patients be in generally good health, be nonsmokers, have realistic expectations, and not have any medical conditions that could affect the healing process.
