What is Buccal Fat Reduction?

Buccal fat removal is a surgical procedure used to reshape the face by removing the buccal fat pads from the lower cheeks. Dr. Hassanzadeh performs this procedure through the inside of your mouth, so there are no visible incisions or scars. Because it is usually performed in the office, you avoid the risks of general anesthesia and may drive yourself home afterward.

Once the buccal fat pads are removed, it gives the face a more slender look and highlights the cheekbones and the jawline. The surgery takes the roundness out of the face and makes it more V-shaped.

The Buccal Fat Reduction Procedure

To start your buccal fat reduction, we’ll administer local anesthesia or general as needed. From there, Dr. Hassanzadeh will make a small incision inside the mouth, along the bite line inside the cheek. She will then remove a portion or all of the fat pad. The incision will then be closed with low-profile dissolving stitches, and the procedure will be repeated on the other cheek.

The buccal fat removal procedure takes about 30 minutes.

Buccal Fat Reduction Recovery

After your buccal fat reduction, you will likely have mild swelling. While you may go back to work as soon as you’d like, it is recommended to avoid vigorous activity for several days. During the first day or two, you will also want to eat soft foods and use an antibiotic mouth rinse to prevent infection. Dr. Hassanzadeh will give you a list of detailed instructions to ensure you know how to properly take care of your incisions.

If you experience any discomfort at the incision site, over-the-counter pain relievers can be taken.

While the initial recovery is fast, you may need 3-4 weeks for swelling to fully subside. However, it can take several months to see your final results as your face adjusts to its new shape.
